We Deliver Extended Opening

It feels good to be able to extend the services we offer. This Wednesday marks the start of our Extended Opening Hours Trial. From the 5th of November onwards, on Wednesday evenings, you’ll be able to browse our shelves until 7pm. Many thanks to the volunteers who have stepped up to make this possible.

Book Launch: The Oil Man and the Sea

Part investigative journalism, part environmental travelogue, The Oil Man and the Sea is the story of a sailing expedition into British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest and the heart of the Northern Gateway Pipeline controversy.

The author, Arno Kopecky, is a Vancouver-based journalist and travel writer whose dispatches have covered four continents and appeared in publications ranging from The Walrus and The Globe and Mail to Reader’s Digest and Foreign Policy.

Arno will be in the Program Room on Tuesday from 7pm to 8pm to read from his book and to share the experiences that inspired it.

Salish Sea Exhibition

With the start of a new month comes a new Program Room Exhibition. Impressions of the Salish Sea are featured at the Library throughout November.

The environs surrounding the Salish Sea are a crucible of creativity. See how artists working in a variety of media interpret their surroundings and incorporate them into their art.

Poetry Open Mic with Gareth Davies

The start of the month also brings a new Poetry Night. This month’s featured poet is Gareth Davies. Gareth was born in Glasgow to a Scottish Mother and a Welsh Father so he comes by poetry honestly. He received widespread notoriety for his book “Poems for the Shaw” about unionizing the Edmonton Conference Center and was active at the Occupy Vancouver Library. He is currently in the 5th year of a seven year album called “A Week of Years In Song” and will be recording in Botswana on Friday, April 17th 2015.

As usual, the first half of the evening with be an open mic performance. Sign-up for the open mic is at 6:45 with readings starting at 7pm. Each poet is assigned three minutes during which they can perform one poem. Slots are available on a First Come First Served basis.

Gareth’s reading will begin at 7:30pm.
