This week's featured events center on three distinct media that give us brief but stirring experiences: paintings by Stefanie Denz, animated shorts from the National Film Board and poems by Deanna Young.

Art Talk: Stefanie Denz | Aug 5 @ 18:00

Hear Stefanie Denz’ talk on “Women in my paintings; narratives of discovery within covert spaces”.

The Salt Spring artist will discuss her paintings as intellectual and emotional examinations of relationships, focusing on women in their daily interactions. The work in the exhibit dramatizes situations of women negotiating their desires within and through their many roles in society.

For a flavor of this event take a look at Stefanie's 2012 interview with Scott Simmons.

NFB Family Movie Matinee | Aug 8 @ 14:00 – 15:00

Get out of the sun and join us in the library for a free family film matinee, featuring animated shorts from the National Film Board of Canada.

A SEA TURTLE STORY chronicles the life cycle of a critically endangered species. Capturing the beauty of the ecosystems that sea turtles inhabit, this film is teaches about these fascinating creatures of the sea.

THE TENDER TALE OF CINDERELLA PENGUIN is a classic fairy tale told with a twist. Cinderella Penguin loses her magic flipper as she runs to meet her midnight deadline, but all ends well when Prince Charming finds the right webbed foot!

OPERATION CUCKOO follows Mr. Edgar as he putters around his cuckoo clock, waiting for the return of his adopted birds in the spring. Catastrophe threatens when one of the clock’s gears falls off! A brave firefly comes to the rescue, proving that friendship can light up your life.

SEA DREAM shows that children, like adults, have days that go badly. This film shows how one girl overcomes the day’s frustrations by diving into an underwater fantasy, where she spends time with her friend, the lady octopus. After playing many wonderful games together, the little girl enters the world of reality feeling fine and refreshed.

Admission and refreshments are free. All ages are welcome.

Book Launch: Deanna Young | Aug 8 @ 19:00

Deanna Young’s haunted and haunting third book of poetry, House Dreams, is a core sample of the life we all live underground, and a view beneath the foundations of the various eras and places that make up one woman’s life story. These poems have the plainspoken power, surreal shifting, uncanny logic and transformed everyday imagery of our most numinous dreams.
