Poems of the Legendary Hermit Hanshan Top of Form

by Kazuaki Tanahashi and Peter Levitt. These poems from China have been celebrated by cultures of both east and west, and continue to be revered as among the most inspiring and enduring works of poetry worldwide. This new translation presents the full corpus of poetry traditionally associated with Hanshan (“Cold Mountain”) and sheds light on its origins and authorship. Kazuaki Tanahashi and Peter Levitt honor the contemplative Buddhist elements of this classic collection of poems while revealing Hanshan’s famously jubilant humor, deep love of solitude in nature, and overwhelming warmth of heart. This translation features the full Chinese text of the original poems including traditional historical records, an in-depth study of the Cold Mountain poets.

Local author Peter Levitt’s ten poetry books include Within Within, One Hundred Butterflies and Bright Root, Dark Root. He has published Fingerpainting on the Moon: Writing and Creativity as a Path to Freedom, and, with Kazuaki Tanahashi, he co-translated A Flock of Fools: Ancient Buddhist Tales of Wisdom and Laughter. He has also published fiction and literary translations from Chinese, Japanese and Spanish. Peter received the prestigious Lannan Foundation Award in Poetry. A long time student of Zen, he edited Thich Nhat Hanh’s classic, The Heart of Understanding, and served as Associate Editor of The Treasury of the True Dharma Eye – Zen Master Dogen’s Shobo Genzo, edited by Kazuaki Tanahashi.
