UNDRIP: A Step Forward
With MLA Adam Olsen
The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) after a majority vote in 2007. In 2016 Canada signed the declaration and is now, on the 150th anniversary of the BNA Act, beginning work on its implementation. The passage of Bill C262 would provide an essential framework for this implementation. In 2017 the NDP Government of BC also committed to adopting and implementing UNDRIP. This agreement stresses self-determination for Indigenous peoples to protect their languages, cultures, laws and economies. In British Columbia land settlements and resource allocation are fundamental issues that will need to be addressed.
