Born in Toronto, Robert Bateman’s early career included teaching high school for 20 years, with two of those years spent in Nigeria. In 1976, he left teaching to devote himself exclusively to painting and travelled widely with his artist/conservationist wife to remote areas of the world. They settled on Salt Spring Island in 1986.
As a keen artist and naturalist, Robert’s many books, museum showings and exhibits have received international critical acclaim and raised millions of dollars in support of natural preservation at home and around the world. Robert’s honours and awards include Officer of the Order of Canada and 12 honorary doctorates.
Salt Spring Island Public Library is pleased to offer its patrons free access passes to The Robert Bateman Centre in Victoria.
